BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
David Cornell was born in London. He attended the Central School of Art, London and the Harrow school of Art, studying Engraving and Sculpture under Friend, Fryer, Roger Hilton and Philip Turner. He was awarded five Art Council Awards of Great Britain. David also carried out further studies at the Academy of Fine Art, University of Pennsylvania, USA, studying anatomy under Roger Beverley .During his early career David worked as an Engraver in the West End of London where he was commissioned to engrave personal stationery for celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Ray and Guy Mitchell who were performing at the London Palladium at the time. David also engraved for titled families, Royal Regiments and Royal Navy and Royal Air Force insignia and crests.
David did military service in 42 Commando, Royal Marines where he travelled around Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia and North America, having the opportunity to see some of the world's greatest masterpieces. In 1965 he won a Royal Mint national selection and was appointed coin and medal engraver, his experience there included Royal Awards, Orders, Seals and Stamps. David was invited to join the Bank of England to engrave the new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II for the new bank notes but he chose to work and study in the USA and returned to the Royal Mint in 1970. Not wishing to move to Wales at that time with the Royal Mint, David accepted an appointment with John Pinches Ltd, Medallist and Trophy Makers as Director of Sculpture. John Pinches became affiliated to Franklin Mint and later with Warner Communications. David's responsibility as International Director of Art enabled him to have a teaching studio in London where he was also able to do his own sculpture, producing many bronzes culminating in a one man show in Chelsea, London. He had the privilege to work in collaboration on projects with Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Manzu, Taro Okamoto, Marc Chagall in his studio in France and many other artists. He also worked on medallic programmes with Lord Mountbatten, Lord Montagu and Sir John Betjeman.
David's work is in many private collections around the world, the British and European Royal Families, including portrait cameos of all the children of the Dutch Royal Family, a birthday portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and a portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales, ballet figures for The Pavlova Society, including a double portrait of Fonteyn and Nureyev. He was commissioned by Crawley Council to produce a one and a quarter life size bronze of Alf Pegler, past Mayor of Crawley and the first life size statue for Crowborough Town Council of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His portraits also include Kate Moss, Leonardo de Caprio, Twiggy, Tatum O'Neal, Chagall, Princess Anne, and most recently the first official coin of Prince William to commemorate his 21st birthday.
David has worked on numerous medals for Japan. These have included:

David also spent five days in Japan helping the Royal Mint in collaboration with Taisei Coin Corporation promoting the launch of the Princess Diana Commemorative Coin, he was a guest of the British Embassy and appeared on many TV stations. David has a family connection with Japan as his Aunt married into a Japanese family and has a cousin who was the Editor of the Japan Times.His interest in Horses has led to numerous commissions including:

David has worked independently for the past twenty one years and has been commissioned by: Royal Doulton, Welsh Porcelain, Spink, Coalport, MBI, Franklin Mint, Tower Mint, Birmingham Mint, Wedgwood, Van Gogh Museum, Compton & Woodhouse, Royal Mint, Jean-Claude and Richard Borek (Germany). He has worked closely with The Richmond Herald of Arms, J.P. Brooke-Little and the College of Arms Trust when he engraved and sculpted a set of sovereigns depicting the Kings and Queens of England and on the reverse Coats of Arms for all seventy monarchs.He has designed and sculpted more official portraits of the Royal Family than any other sculptor and won the Royal Mint competition to design the 50 pence NHS coin and the £5 memorial coin of Diana, Princess of Wales which was approved by the Diana Memorial Fund and the Spencer family. Many of these coins depict the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and all Commonwealth designs were personally approved by Her Majesty. His most recent works include official coins celebrating the Queen's 80th Birthday and also a set of coins celebrating the Queen's Golden Wedding.David's work also includes many paintings in oil, portraits, horses, dancers nudes are just some of the subjects.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and was elected Vice-President of the Society of Portrait Sculptors in 1977 and is a Past President of the Society of Sculptors, Medal and Coin Engravers. David was awarded the Diploma di Merito Universita Delle Arti in Italy in 1982. David was, for many years a judge at the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Art Council Awards of Great Britain.
