Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Created the Sherlock Holmes characters. David was commissioned by Crowborough County Council, England to sculpt a Life size Bronze statue of the author. This sculpture has now been completed and was recently erected in Crowborough, England. The statue was unveiled on Saturday 14th April 2001 by Georgina Doyle one of five surviving relatives who were all at the unveiling. A bugle fanfare was given by The Light Infantry from Winchester where the Doyle family has historic connections.


On this page we take you behind the scenes so you can see the artist working on this project and follow his progress from the initial model or Maquette stage, building the Armature, Clay, Mould, Lost Wax stage, through to Casting, and Erecting the finished work and the unveiling ceremony.

   

Maquette stage

Armature and Artist  

Steel framework armature of the body with the artist. The head is being created separately.

Armature of head with Maquette  

Armature of the head this also has a steel framework but it has now been filled  with foam. The pegs sticking out act as a reference showing the artist how far to build out with the clay. Measurements are taken from photographs of the author and from the maquette (shown).
